For more than a century, the Western collective of foreign policy “experts” as well as “think-tank gurus” have demonstrated a persistent inability to comprehend the political realities of the Middle East. Yet, instead of prompting genuine reassessments, these obvious failures have been routinely explained away, and the same persons have persevered in dominating public debates and policy solutions. Thus, year after year, bloody conflicts have been raging, while slogans of peace have only served as covers for even deeper strategic obfuscations. The conundrum has been that all of the so-called “peace agreements,” without exception, have been built on smoke and mirrors.
The Illusion of Peace in the Middle East
Presently, ceasefire and peace talks are taking only baby steps and remain stuck. The problem is not a lack of knowledge or information. It is a deeper detachment from how power actually works in the Middle East rather than as outsiders would like it to be. Too many politicians and “expert” analysts rely on abstract frameworks – about constructing nonexistent institutions, creating artificial incentives, or imaginary pathways to Westernization – while magnanimously discounting history, identity, religion, culture, coercion, and military requirements. Thus, the Middle Eastern states are treated as policy laboratories, local complexities as variables to be “managed,” and resistance to external designs as temporary malfunction rather than a structural inevitability.
The Central Role of the Ummah
For all of these reasons, it is high time to speak the truth about the core realities of the Middle East. Most saliently, there will be no meaningful stability in the Middle East without fundamental changes in the Islamic religious as well as political culture within the global community of Muslim believers that transcend nationality, race, and language, forming a single, unified body of all Muslims, called the Ummah. In its moderately peaceful interpretation, the Ummah is the sole legitimate form of human existence. National identity, ethnicity, different religious creeds, and even family loyalties are treated as illegitimate and sinful. Absolute fealty (wala’ in Arabic) is owed only to the Ummah, and disloyalty (bara’ in Arabic) applies exclusively to the “ungrateful disbelievers,” or Kuffar (Kafir in singular in Arabic), which generally defines all those who deny the oneness of Allah and do not accept the prophethood of Muhammad. Moreover, the Ummah is a borderless political entity that ultimately must be unified under a single authority of the Caliphate, which outrightly and unequivocally rejects international law and all “apostate” political systems. Finally, the Ummah is presented as being under permanent attack by the West, the Jews, all secular governments – mainly by the democracies -, and deviant Muslims. Consequently, all of the above make it an absolute religious mandate for violent mobilization (Jihad in Arabic), to root out every non-Muslim across the globe.
The second reality flows from the more radical, or even terroristic interpretation of Islam. The Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies throughout the world are not just attempting to create a unified community of Islam, but an absolutist political identity that demands blind loyalty to the faith, the acceptance of Allah as the sole sovereign, and legitimizes violence as the religious testimony in the name of collective victory.
Gaza, Hamas, and the Logic of Escalation
A historical trace of how the meaning of Ummah shifted from a religious concept into its radicalized political creation, leads us from the collapse of the Ottoman Caliphate to the Israeli-Arab wars between 1948 and the present, and the global terrorism of the post-9/11 era, cementing the definition of the Ummah as a totalitarian Muslim identity. The most recent terroristic aggression against the State of Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023, has been the barbaric and totally unacceptable act of terror, characterized by unimaginable violence against defenseless and innocent civilians. The Islamic terrorists’ attack originated in Gaza, an isolated enclave with no real international legal status. An enclave, in which already kindergarten-aged toddlers are taught to loathe everybody who does not fully agree with the Muslim Brotherhood’s and its Hamas affiliate venomous hatred of the Jews and all those who support them, and where they walk to their pre-schools on streets named for mass murderers, whose families enjoy throughout their earthly lives the “Pay for Slay” charity of the “moderate Palestinian Authority,” provided for by the bighearted contributions of the dumbed-down international community. Rooted in the Qur’anic myth of „martyrdom” (shahadat in Arabic), it is the act of total submission to Allah’s absolute powers over the individual and the Ummah. This meaning of “martyrdom” is not optional, it is the absolute duty of the faithful. More comparatively, in the Judeo-Christian tradition martyrdom has been an element of the believers’ free agency. In Islam, “martyrdom” means the total enslavement of the faithful to the will of Allah.
Accordingly, the Qur’an and also the Hadith are full of commands to “kill in the way of Allah.” And this is the presently unsolvable hindrance to any meaningful agreement in Gaza and beyond. The concept of “martyrdom” and “Jihad” have never been the vaunted paradigm of exemplary ethical behaviour of selfless moral behavior. Neither was “martyrdom” designed as the ultimate act of self-sacrifice. In reality, “martyrdom” in Islam has always been the opposite of true faith and the denial of individual freedom.
Why Lasting Peace Remains Elusive
The Islamic „Martyrs” and “Jihadists” of the 21st century are the uncompromising enemies of any stable ceasefire or peace treaty. Their longing for the revival of a lie, namely the restoration of the 7th century Medina, is an offense against humanity. Hence, every peace effort must start with purging this “culture of death” mentality from within Islam in its entirety.
Equally misleading is the “double standard” that shamelessly explains religious terrorism as an understandable defensive reaction to Israel’s “expansion,” and Western “supremacy” as contrary to the Qur’anic dictum of the coming universality of the Islamic religion.
A támogatási lehetőségek: http://gulyasagyu.media/tamogatas
